  2. Jazz Musician. Born Eugene Ammons, he was a tenor saxophonist and son of jazz pianist Albert Ammons. In he went on the road with trumpeter King Kolax and the following year he joined Billy Eckstine's Bebop Band and soon made a name for himself. 3. This album was originally recorded for a local Chicago label, under Howard McGhee's name, and possibly a 10 inch LP. However, it was recorded at a time when Gene Ammons was recording at his most prolific for his regular label Prestige. Gene Ammons had a great soul (?R&B) attitude to his playing although being defined as a bop player/5(3).

The picture of a younger Gene Ammons, with a white mouthpiece, has nothing to do with his playing here and probably eminates from his tenure with the Woody Herman /5(2).

I've seen pictures of him playing both hard rubber and metal (probably a Link). As much of a 'Trane, Grossman, Stitt fan that I am, Ammons' sound was in my opinion the biggest of 'em all.
